Baby baboons - March 2010

Our new baby baboons Marlin, Gus, Bonnie and Clyde continue to win the hearts of everyone who meets them and now they are joined by a fifth baby! Lola joined our baby baboons in February and the others have really welcomed her into their group. It’s like she’s always been with them!

Together, the mischievous five cause mayhem and are never quiet for long! They are bottle fed six times a day and taken on daily walks (or carries!) by the volunteers. As with most babies, they can’t be left alone for long and so they spend each night sleeping with the volunteers in their beds. Wrapped up in nappies and a warm bottle of milk in their mouths, the babies just love being hugged and cuddled and they usually sleep the whole night through (unlike most human babies!). However, this is not to say that the nights always go smoothly as quite often the beds (and volunteers) end up rather wet, despite the nappies!

Marlin is growing up fast and has taken on the role of alpha male in the group and frequently shows the other babies who is boss! The others tend to give as good as they get though, especially Bonnie, but it’s clear that Marlin will need to move and join the senior baby baboons soon. As he will be the youngest baboon there rather than the oldest it might be a bit of a shock for him!
