Baby baboons - January 2012

In November, poor little Rafiki cut his finger open quite badly on the baby baboon cage, resulting in a little piece of flesh hanging off his hand. Because of the place where the cut was, it would have been impossible to just bandage it (plus he would have probably just ripped it off again), so we decided to sedate him so Rudie could take a closer look.

Our poor baby was very scared when he received his injection while Stu held him as secure as possible.

After only a few minutes, our little Rafiki fell asleep and we could have a closer look at the injury. Rudie quickly decided that the most efficient thing to do would be to cut off the little piece of flesh that was still hanging from the finger, and then clean the wound well so it would heal properly. But first, he cleaned the wound to make sure it would not be infected, and we also performed a complete health check on Rafiki, recording his weight, size and pulse.

Rudie then made a clean cut and cleaned the wound again, only to bandage it well afterwards, which proved to be a bit difficult on Rafiki's tiny little finger!!

Some time later, Rafiki was already in best form and back playing with his friends, who had for sure missed him while he was gone! Later that afternoon, he was already fit enough to go on a well deserved walk to the babies' favorite tree...
